Reducing the resolution of a grayscale (or any) image involves choosing a
reduction algorithm, although that choice is often dictated by (or buried
in) the graphics software.  Given the choice of the following methods, does
anyone have a reasoned preference or a good bibliographic reference for
8-bit gray images?

     First resampling
     Second resampling
     Averaging
     Nearest neighbor
