Having just returned from a pre-conferance seminar in San Francisco
on Computers and Museums I have become a new convert to standardization.
What I'm talking about in particular would be a Museum's Registrar and
Educational database, contains object text files and images be they still
or motion.
I only know of one proprietary application that would be suitable
for both a registrar as well as a curator of education, and that being
Embark by Digital Collections, Inc. It is very intuitive and visually
appealing as well. I'm not trying to push this product, rather use it as an
example. My registrar is using Accessions 2.5, another propietary
application. Neither is standard or cross platform capable. The person I
talked with at Digital indicated that Embark would be usable on Windows
soon. I've read where Filemaker Pro 3.0 is supposed to be cross platform
usable,but!!?
The San Francisco Musum of Modern Art has Embark up and running in
there gallery for the public and I understand they have it behind the scene
with more depth and security for scholarly pursuits.
The bottom line is: Is there a vehicle out there, besides WWW,
that we can all enter our data in and access it universally? What say you
fellow imaglisters?
