Sherry:Thank you for the info on the NEW DuoScan T2000 XL. It seems to be so new that my supplier doesn't have it listed. So I have been checking into other scanners as well.
Linotype-Hell has an Opal Ultra that compares to the Horizon/Duo specs (and the price.) Then there is the Microtek ScanMaker III and Umax's Mirage II. These are a good bit cheaper, but I suspect there is a catch to the lower cost. I know both Linotype-Hell and Agfa come with proprietary software.
We seem to be between two technological steps. I see several new or soon-to-be-new "high-resolution" scanners coming onto the market. Scanner resolutions are at the 600-700dpi (optical) mark in the under $10,000. price range. Then there is a gap to move to the over 1000dpi scanners that are priced over $20,000.
