********************************************************** The Library of Congress National Digital Library Program and the LC National Digital Library Ameritech Competition announce the release of the Robert Runyon Photograph Collection of the South Texas Border Area from the University of Texas at : http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award97/txuhtml/runyhome.html

This collection of the South Texas Border Area includes 8,000 items and is a unique visual resource documenting the Lower Rio Grande Valley during the early 1900s. It is the third Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition project to be integrated into the American Memory online collections at: http://memory.loc.gov

Donated by the Runyon family to the Center for American History in 1986, the South Texas Border photographs include glass negatives, lantern slides, nitrate negatives, prints, and postcards, representing the life's work of commercial photographer Robert Runyon (1881-1968), a longtime resident of South Texas. His photographs document the history and development of South Texas and the border, including the Mexican Revolution, the U.S. military presence at Fort Brown and along the border prior to and during World War I, and the growth and development of the Rio Grande Valley.

National Digital Library Ameritech collections released previously are, American Landscape and Architectural Design, 1850-1920, from the Frances Loeb Library, Graduate School of Design, Harvard University at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award97/mhsdhtml/aladhome.html and The Northern Great Plains, 1880-1920, photographs from the Hulstrand and Pazandak Photograph Collection at the Institute for Regional Studies, North Dakota State University at: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/award97/ndfahtml/ngphome.html

The integration of the University of Texas collection and the abovementioned collections with the Library of Congress American Memory collections is made possible by a gift from Ameritech. The Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition enables public, research, and academic libraries, museums, historical societies, and archival institutions (except federal institutions) to create digital collections of primary resources. These digital collections will complement and enhance collections of the National Digital Library Program at the Library of Congress. The National Digital Library is envisioned as a distributed collection of converted library materials and digital originals to which many American institutions will contribute.
