MULTIMEDIA AT THE MILLENNIUM and BEYOND
Los Angeles has been the capital of the entertainment and movie
industry for many decades. During the past few years, it has
witnessed spectacular growth in the multimedia industry with many
successful companies providing both multimedia content and systems
expertise. The conference complements this setting by presenting and
exploring technological and artistic advancements in multimedia.
Technical issues, theory and practice, artistic and consumer
innovations will bring together researchers, artists, developers,
educators, performers, and practitioners of multimedia. Present your
work at Multimedia 2000 and define the future of multimedia in the
next millennium.
TECHNICAL PROGRAM
The technical program will consist of plenary sessions and talks with
topics of general interest in three main tracks:
- multimedia processing and coding: including multimedia content
analysis, content-based multimedia retrieval, multimedia security,
audio/image/video processing, compression, etc.
- multimedia system support and networking: including network
protocols, Internet, operating systems, middleware, servers, QoS,
databases, thin clients, etc.
- multimedia tools, end-systems and applications: including hypermedia
systems, user interfaces, authoring, multi-modal interaction and
integration, multimedia education, design and applications of
virtual environments, etc.
Submissions covering other areas of multimedia computing and systems
are also welcome. An award will be given for the best overall paper
and the best paper primarily authored by a student. Please identify
student papers in your cover letter. In addition, the top 3-5 papers
in each track will be recommended for a special issue of ACM/Springer
Verlag Multimedia Systems Journal. The Best Student Paper will be
awarded a state-of-the-art laptop from Hewlett-Packard.
Papers must be formatted in two-column conference style and may not
exceed 10 pages in length including all figures, tables, and
references. A template is available at
http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html. In the cover
letter of your submission, please indicate which one of the three main
track areas (see above) that the paper fits best. (Note that authors
may also indicate another track of interest, which will then trigger a
cross-track review.)
Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign a copyright
agreement with the ACM as a condition of publishing their work in the
proceedings. An author who embeds an object such as an art image,
copyrighted by third party, is expected to obtain that party's
permission to include the object with the understanding that the
entire work may be distributed.
Please submit full papers by one of the following three methods:
1. Submit your paper in PDF or postscript format at the conference
submission web site: http://www.tu-darmstadt.de/MM2000
2. Send an electronic copy of your paper in PDF or postscript format
by email to: mailto:mailto:Stephan.Fischer@KOM.tu-darmstadt.de
3. Send 8 hard copies of papers (if no electronic submission possible) to:
Klara Nahrstedt
Department of Computer Science
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Panel proposals on timely and controversial topics are invited. These
submissions should be formatted like a technical paper, and if
accepted will be included in the conference proceedings. They should
include:
1. An introduction by the organizer/moderator. (1 page)
2. Position statements from each panelist. (1 page each)
3. Brief biographical sketches of all participants.
Please submit your proposal by email to:
Richard Muntz, CS Dept, UCLA

STATE-OF-THE-ART TUTORIALS
Tutorials by leading experts will precede the technical program and
enhance its value for the novice and seasoned professional
alike. Full- and half-day offerings will be offered. Tutorial
organizers receive an honorarium which can be used to defray part of
the cost of attending the conference. We invite you to take advantage
of this excellent opportunity.
Tutorials will span a wide variety of topics and will range from
introductory to advanced material. In keeping with the theme of MM
2000, tutorials should be focused on topics related to the
conference's three main tracks. In addition, tutorials should have a
broad appeal to conference attendees. Finally, priority will be given
to proposals which include both a theoretical overview of issues in
the topic area, and practical case studies or examples which
demonstrate specific problems and relevant solutions.
Proposals to organize/present a tutorial should be 3-4 pages long and
have the following organization:
1. Cover page:
Name and affiliation of the organizer
Tutorial Title
Preferred duration (full day or half day)
Level (introductory, intermediate, advanced)
Names and affiliations of additional speakers, if any
Intended audience
Tutorial abstract/overview - what will attendees learn?
A/V requirements
2. Detailed Tutorial description and outline (1-2 pages). If there is
more than one presenter, who will cover each topic/section?
3. Biographical sketch of each speaker (one paragraph each), to
include: current research interests, important publications,
projects and/or awards (as appropriate), and courses previously
presented at other conferences.
Submit tutorial proposals either by email or URL form to:
Kevin Almeroth, U.C. Santa Barbara
mailto:mailto:almeroth@cs.ucsb.edu

SHORT PAPERS
There will be an opportunity for researchers to present new work and
ideas that are not yet ready for the full presentation. Short papers
will be presented in poster format, and will be included in both the
hardcopy and electronic proceedings. The deadline for submission of
short papers is scheduled later than the deadline for full technical
papers to allow the incorporation of the latest developments in the
field.
Please submit your work electronically and described in 2 to 4 pages -
either as a URL (you must have the rights to all the material there,
and guarantee stability of the files until the conference), or as a
postscript file, formatted for US letter paper (8.5 by 11 inches) to:
Forouzan Golshani, Arizona State University
mailto:mailto:golshani@asu.edu

every area of multimedia technology and its application. Submissions
are encouraged in areas including multimedia databases, content
analysis, media processing, compression, multimedia storage,
networking, and multimedia hypermedia authoring, interfaces and
innovative applications. Submissions will be peer-reviewed to ensure
quality. Submitters are encouraged to provide videotapes where
applicable to show the proposed demonstrations. Demonstrators will be
provided with space, power and networking, but the conference is unable
to provide computing equipment.
An award will be given for the best technical demo, as judged by an
evaluation panel.

electronic proceedings. Each workshop will include a separate
registration fee for all participants.
Workshop proposals should be in plain text and should include:
1. Title of the Workshop.
2. A brief technical description of the workshop, identifying specific
technical issues that will be its focus.
