Until recently, the digitization of library collections has been
conducted mainly by larger institutions funded by grant money. Today,
digitization is becoming a standard component of all library
operations. This workshop takes participants through all the steps of
creating digital collections, from selection of materials to be
digitized and selection of a metadata scheme, through procedures and
workflows for getting the digitization done, to publicizing digitized
collections and measuring user satisfaction. There will also be a
chance to tour the UW-Madison Digital Production facility.
Course topics:
*The nature of digital collections and the potential effect on
collection building, preservation and access
*Selection of materials for digitization, with consideration of the
nature of the original materials - ownership, intellectual content,
physical format and condition, and projected use
*Format options for the proposed digital product and the methods of access
*In-house digital production facilities vs. outsourcing
*Production and project management practices
*Administrative and technical infrastructure to support digitization
*Creating and maintaining access, presentation and navigation for
digital objects
*Outreach and evaluation
