UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies, Continuing Education Services presents --

Creating Digital Collections: From Selection to Use

Date: April 22-23, 2002 Time: 9:00 am - 4:30 pm Location: The Pyle Center, UW-Madison Fee: $299 Registration deadline: April 10 CEUs: 1.5

Until recently, the digitization of library collections has been conducted mainly by larger institutions funded by grant money. Today, digitization is becoming a standard component of all library operations. This workshop takes participants through all the steps of creating digital collections, from selection of materials to be digitized and selection of a metadata scheme, through procedures and workflows for getting the digitization done, to publicizing digitized collections and measuring user satisfaction. There will also be a chance to tour the UW-Madison Digital Production facility.

    Course topics:

*The nature of digital collections and the potential effect on collection building, preservation and access

*Selection of materials for digitization, with consideration of the nature of the original materials - ownership, intellectual content, physical format and condition, and projected use

*Format options for the proposed digital product and the methods of access

*In-house digital production facilities vs. outsourcing

    *Production and project management practices

*Administrative and technical infrastructure to support digitization

*Creating and maintaining access, presentation and navigation for digital objects

    *Outreach and evaluation

    Instructors:

From UW-Madison's General Library System, Peter Gorman, Library Technology Group; Lee Konrad, Digital Content Group (DCG); Sandra Paske, Digital Content Group Imaging Services; Steven Dast, Digital Project Coordinator.

Many DCG projects can be viewed at http://www.library.wisc.edu/etext/
(Select "Local Projects in Electronic Text & Multimedia" from the left menu bar).

From UW-Madison School of Library and Information Studies, Jane Pearlmutter, Associate Director, and Debra Shapiro, continuing education specialist and webmaster, who have been helping smaller libraries select materials for digitization.
