    <pre> Hi Folks,

In 1996, thanks to a grant, we bought an assortment of digital imaging kit including an Epson 12000 flatbed scanner. The techies were not happy as HP is the standard product issued here and made it clear I couldn't expect the same level of support. At the time it cost around £2k
($3k); they are less expensive now, I think. Apart from the lamp going after about 12 months - which is rare and was possibly due to the number of times the machine had been moved - it has been fine and I am very pleased with the results. This model can scan originals 1:1 up to A3. It came with its own freebie imaging software but we run it with Photoshop 5, full version, bought at the same time. This was chiefly because we wanted to be able to set the print output to be as near as possible what we see on screen, which the free software couldn't handle. nearly six years on the scanner is still going strong. Very occasionally if I am doing a lot of scanning in one session the moving head will 'stick' and I have to press the re-set button. I don't know if this is a mechanical or a software/PC problem.

I wish I could be as enthusiastic about its companion, an Epson Stylus 3000 colour printer (prints up to A2). This can be very slow (up to 30 minutes for an A3 print) and to make matters worse the sheet feed is unreliable - and when you have to repeat the printing at that speed and can't get on with anything else you feel very, very sore.
