Lossy compression gen larger file?

Subject:      Lossy compression gen larger file?

I've been lurking on this list for about a year now, but now I have a
specific question I know you all can help with.

Can anyone on the list explain why a JPEG or other lossy format will
eventually become larger if it's compressed over and over?  I know that
it's true, but I don't know the reason.
