Our Library is involved in a preservation project with the State of Sonora, Mexico. The project looks to microfilm documents from approximately the late 1600s to the early 1900s. I'm told that many of the documents up to the 19th century are hand-written. And as you would expect, the majority of the documents come in a variety of shapes and sizes as well as various qualities (from poor to good). One of my UA colleagues thought that our Sonoran partners might find it easier to digitize first and microfilm from the digital image. This surprised me, since I thought there would be considerable tweaking, adjustments, editing, etc. to digitize these materials. But, I've never microfilmed material so I have no frame of reference for comparing the complexities and learning curve.
I'd appreciate hearing your opinions and experiences in digitizing first and making microfilm from the images. Also, can you point me in the direction of equipment that would generate the microfilm from images, most likely TIFFs.
Regards, Stuart
