Hello,I'm a new member to the list and new to digital image libraries. I've been a cataloger for 8 years and am now in charge of the multimedia archives of a company photography/graphics dept. This is a new position for the company also, so I get to "create" the management system to provide better access to the photo/graphics archives. The system that has been ordered is Telescope. We will also be using a CDROM version of Cumulus for quick and dirty file access offsite (for presentations, conferences, etc.). I found a couple of posts about Cumulus in the listserv archives, but nothing on Telescope. Anybody familiar with Telescope?
I am a little concerned about access points and wonder if the photography/graphics staff and I are talking apples and apples--they want keyword access but I'm not sure if they are talking controlled/uncontrolled vocabulary. As a cataloger I would like a controlled vocabulary and can see an argument for providing both keyword and controlled vocabulary access.
I've also been looking for thesauri for help in building a controlled vocabulary--photography collections seem to use Getty's AAT (online access now), but there's also LC's Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I & II. My manager (head of the photography dept.) is openminded, but has handed me a copy of Stock Workbook Keywording Guidelines (PACA (?), Nov. 1, 1996) as a reference. Any advice would be appreciated. This collection will be strictly (for the moment) digitized color photos and later may be logos also.
I don't seem to be getting any mail from this listserv, though I am registered--are there just not many postings here?
Thanks for any advice,
H. Stephens
