Hello,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but do we
have folks on this list that manage film collections in libraries,
especially vhs, laser and/or dvd formatted feature film collections?

If so, read on. We have been considering the addition of dvd formatted films to our cinema studies film collection. We have some people resisting this idea (oh no! not yet another film format!), and others, including faculty, who really want more dvd materials because of the obvious flexibility of this format for use in lectures, etc.

Has this been a big deal anywhere else or are we worried needlessly? I have been trying to make the argument that we should begin purchasing dvd the sooner the better, that we should view advances in format just as we do software upgrades (anyone still using office software purchased 10 years ago on a pc ten years old?), and so forth. But resistence persists, so maybe I'm wrong. There is very little in library literature concerning acquisition of dvd films for an academic library film collection. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone about this issue.
