Folks,

I've received many responses to my post on Catalog CD. I haven't been ignoring you; instead, it makes sense to simply reply once to the list. Also, sorry for the few days of delay but I was experiencing system problems.

First, I'll give more detail on what Catalog CD is. I'll then follow with the list of beta sites where you can have them made.

Catalog CD (as it is currently referred to) is an application of the Photo CD family to the problem of image database distribution on CD-ROM. The product is essentially one disc with up to ca.4000-5000 images on it along with a (flat) database and both Mac and Windows versions of a software search-and-display engine called Browser. That is, it's an image database that you can punch into either platform and use, as is.

The database has keywords and user-definable fields (up to 100, and of types 'text', 'number', 'date', 'list', etc.). Browser looks and feels just like Shoebox -- you can get pages of thumbnails in response to queries, the database info for images can be easily displayed, and double-clicking on a thumbnail brings up a higher resolution (256x384) version of the image. It has many other features as well.

It works best when fed images from Master (or Pro-Master) Photo CD's in that it directly uses the same format and thus preserves the image quality inherent in Photo CD. Other sources, such as TIFF images, will also work. The source for the database information is a tab-delimited text file. One database source that I know works is Kodak's Shoebox software; others should work as well. (You will want to get detailed information on requirements for both images and data from the service provider.)

Currently, this product is being offered through beta sites. They are...
