Our standard configuration for image processing PowerMacs is 80 Mb, the x 5 figure is an excellent rule of thumb.

I'm in the midst of getting a PC spec together for image database access, this is *not* for running PhotoShop or úpp on. So far I've tested a Pentium 60 Mhz with 16 Mb RAM and a 66Mhz with 32 Mb RAM both running Windows 3.11 and using PCI bus architecture. Bottomline is that the same is true, the more RAM the better for PhotoShop. Test images go up to 10 MB 24 bit. Graphics/video card is a 64 bit Matrox PCI beast driving a rather nice Mitsubishi 21" monitor. If I was speccing a PC to use PhotoShop then I'd suggest Windows NT and as much RAM as you can afford and investigate DSP's for JPEG compression/decompression if its a relevant bottleneck.
Good luck.
