Position: Head, Visual Materials Division and Curator of Graphic Arts

Available: Immediately

Description: Under the general supervision of the Associate University Librarian for Rare Books and Special Collections, as Head of the Visual Materials Division, the incumbent will supervise the Curators of the Theatre Collection and Western Americana/Historic Maps, two support staff members assigned to the Division, and student and hourly assistants, as well as overseeing implementation of the Department's exhibition programs. The Head of the Visual Materials Division also sits on the Special Collections Council, which assists the Associate University Librarian in planning, setting policy, and managing the Department. As Curator of Graphic Arts, the incumbent will oversee the management of the Graphic Arts Collection, including prints and drawings, photographs, the Sinclair Hamilton Collection of American Illustrated Books, fine bindings, certain other illustrated books in the General Rare Books Collection, and the Department's holdings of realia. The Curator will be responsible for: maintaining an appropriate collection development policy and monitoring expenditure of acquisitions funds, acquiring items for the collections and overseeing their accessioning, creating cataloging and conservation priorities, supervising their research use, participating in the exhibition and publications programs of the Department, providing as scheduled reference services in the Department, as well as undertaking assigned projects relating to illustrated books in the General Rare Books Collection and concerning the history of the book and related subjects. The incumbent will also be encouraged to do research in the Collections and to publish articles, essays, and exhibition catalogs that further explain and interpret the Collections to the varied groups of the Princeton University community and beyond.

Qualifications: Graduate degree, preferably in a humanistic discipline, and at least ten years' experience in a research library, with a record of successful supervisory experience in that setting required. Knowledge of the history of the graphic arts and the history of printed books and an ability to communicate clearly, both in writing and orally, with faculty, donors, students, and other members of the Princeton University community required. Familiarity with computing applications in special collections and an MLS degree are helpful attributes.

Salary & Rank: Dependent upon qualifications and experience.
