Hi you all,

We are a group at the Engineering Faculty of the National University of Rosario ( Argentina ) working on image and text processing. We have an agreement with the municipality to store the public library newspapers on CD and design the software to access the information. The proyect is quite big and we are just at the beginning of it.

Our first idea was to scan the newspapers directly and then store a compressed version ( via available software ) of the resulting files, but we had to discard this approach due to the following problems:

- The scanner should be able to deal with A0 size sheets - Old newspapers are in poor condition and would not stand being scanned - Several years would be needed to finish the scanning process

On the other hand, several newspaper editors keep microfilmed versions of their issues. We are now trying to contact them to get the microfilms.

The most likely solution now seems to be to scan the microfilms - if that is possible - and to microfilm or photograph the remaining issues and then scan them.

We are interested in hearing about any similar experience on the subject and to get any available information on microfilm and/or negatives scanners and on any other equipement that could be useful.

If you have any information please contact us.

Thank you very much for reading this message.
