A note from down underIn Australia there has been a government initiated move to "Competency Standards" for all library workers. It has not been accepted how these will be used since they are not to be related to specific job descriptions. The rhetoric behind their development does concern me very much. I must admit I chuckled about the references to 'brain surgeons'. At a seminar in Canberra on Compentency Standards, a representative from the government used the example: "Skills are the only relevant measure. Who's to say I can't do brain surgery? I should be judged on the outcome." All I could do was reply that I wouldn't like to be his patient!
