How Many Parts in the Hierarchy?

Subject:      How Many Parts in the Hierarchy?

We are just starting the indexing part of our new image database which
uses a proprietary software called Grafix.  In developing our thesaurus,
we are questioning the wisdoms of going with a two or three part subject
hierarchy. Right now we are working with 2 parts, a category and keyword
but we also can use a subject field for even more general classification


EX: Subject: Animal
    Category: Mammal
    Keyword:  Dog




Anybody out there have input?


I'm new to the list and apologize if this is old ground.
