[Posted to multiple lists -- please forgive duplication.]

The project team of the Five College Archives Digital Access Project is pleased to announce an important milestone. This three-year, Mellon-funded cooperative project, now in its third year, seeks to digitize and make available on the Web a variety of archival and manuscript materials pertaining to the history of women's higher education. More information about the project and the participating institutions is available at http://clio.fivecolleges.edu.

Recently we completed the digitization of all the collections at the Mount Holyoke College Archives and Special Collections that were selected for inclusion in the project. The collections, which comprise approximately 12,366 items/pages in ten separate archival record groups or manuscript collections, are now available for browsing and searching on the Web. All were chosen for their value in documenting the history of the educational mission of Mount Holyoke College, which was founded by Mary Lyon in 1837 as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The college is a pioneer in higher education for women in the U.S.

At the end of this message is a summary of the MHC collections now available on the Web. Except where noted in online finding aids, all collections have been captured in their entirety (no omissions or sampling) and presented with fidelity to original order and provenance. Taken together, the collections constitute a rich and (we hope) convenient tool for many kinds of research in the history of women's education (though not a tool intended fully to replace the originals). Already we are aware of many Mount Holyoke undergraduates and remote researchers who have made effective use of these electronic collections.

In the next phase of the project we are digitizing a comparable amount of material at the Smith College Archives (as well as one manuscript collection from the Sophia Smith Collection there). Smith, also founded as an all-women's institution, was founded in 1872. These materials will gradually be added to the project web server to compliment the Mount Holyoke collections. After that, the project will move on to Amherst College, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Hampshire College.

Colleagues are invited to visit the project Web site (http://clio.fivecolleges.edu) and send comments or suggestions.
