    Perhaps the DIG was talking about "added value" information, i.e., data that may inform the image user, but that wouldn't necessarily leap to mind as classificatory search terms. How valuable this information is as metadata may be determined largely by the collection and its primary users.

    You may wish to explore some of the discussion on the Visual Resources Association listserv, since we do talk about image cataloging and metadata. The VRA Core Categories are offered as guidelines for cataloging images, and make recommendations about authority tools for vocabulary control.
