My first compelling reason to not do this is the lack of agreement on
standards for digital preservation. You may be able to read that electronic
image or text now, but what about in the future? If your digital image is
unreadable then you would have to go back to the originals and rescanning
originals always puts them at risk. There are many stories about
organizations converting digital images or text to microfilm because of the
uncertainty of preservation issues of digital surrogates.
