There is a good handbook on image quality that will help on tonal reproduction;

Has anyone experience in comparing 8 bit greyscale scans
(ideally captured on a Zeutschel or another
bookscaner) with black and white photographs?
What are the general criteria for comparison ((e.g. tonal
reproduction, number of colours in black and white
photographs) and is there any literature about this
issue?
To what extent is the quality of greyscale scans
comparable with b/w photographs?
Many thanks,
Norbert
