RMS PHOTOGRAPHIC SERVICES NASA, Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Operations Houston, TexasPOSITION TITLE: IMAGE LIBRARIAN
DEPARTMENT: IMAGERY MANAGEMENT OPERATION
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Image Librarian is responsible for performing government contract tasks related to accessing photographic materials stored in the Johnson Space Center Film Repository, with primary responsibility for detailed catalog descriptions of photographic materials supporting the manned spaceflight program, and locating such materials in response to user requests.
Specific duties include cataloging new material into the collection by reviewing preliminary descriptions supplied by photographers or requesters. This information is enriched through subject term assignment using a controlled vocabulary, and through visual analysis of the image. Additional description is provided through application of general acquired knowledge of NASA-related activities, and through contact with appropriate offices when further research is necessary. The Image Librarian shall also participate in the development and revision of new cataloging schemes, and maintain the accuracy of previously cataloged material. The Image Librarian is the first point of contact for all reference questions concerning collection holdings.
The primary tool utilized in cataloging and record retrieval tasks is a computer database management system incorporating a textual thesaurus for vocabulary control. Operation of this system must be carried out in a professional manner, following standards and guidelines as provided in a formal accredited Library Science curriculum.
EXPERIENCE: Two years experience cataloging or indexing and abstracting in a scientific or technical environment preferred. Familiarity with microcomputers.
EDUCATION: MLS degree with emphasis on automated indexing and abstracting technology and practices.
ACCOUNTABILITY: The Image Librarian reports directly to the Manager of Imagery Management.
