While I don't consider myself an 'expert', my read on off-site and/or archiving such databases is that optical or the newer hybrid magneto-optical formats offer the greatest durability and accessibility. CDs do indeed have a number of drawbacks--among them access and data transfer speeds--but they are durable and drive speeds are rising. I have heard and read many good things about the Iomega Jaz drive. This device is available in both IDE and SCSI interfaces, can be a bootable drive (with a ca. 10 ms. access time, it is as fast as many hard disks, and it also has a high data transfer rate--indeed it is one way to run multiple O/Ss on one computer; just have a disk for Win95, one for Win NT, a disk for O/S2, etc.). My plan for a computer I will be building is to use a Jaz for backup. I'm not real clear on all specifics, but the media is more optical than magnetic, and, at ca. $100/disk for a 1GB (2 compressed) disk, the media price is certainly right. (No, I am not a salesman for Iomega.)

Hope this has been of some help.
