I have had some success transforming 1-bit TIFFS into GIFs. At crt resolutions the aliasing may be too much if you use 1-bit GIFs, but if you translate into 3-bit (8-level) GIFs the files are quite compact and well anti-aliased. In Photoshop, I believe you have to translate first into 24-bit RGB before going to GIF.-Dan Johnston Library Photo Service, UC Berkeley
