    POSITION: Multimedia Services Specialist DIVISION: Public Services DEPARTMENT: Marjorie I. Mitchell Multimedia Center REPORTS TO: Head, Marjorie I. Mitchell Digital Media Services

    SUMMARY: The Digital Media Services (DMS) unit of the Mitchell Multimedia Center provides production, consulting, training, development, and media delivery services to library staff and university faculty. Special areas of focus include high-end image production, time-based media digitization, media streaming, and digital media repository systems development. Digital Media Services is also heavily invested in supporting the web publishing activities of the library and related digital library projects. The DMS Testbed accommodates research and testing of a variety of emerging tools and protocols, making it a critical component of the University Library's ability to anticipate, test, and implement new technologies.

    The Multimedia Services Specialist supports the activities and operations of the Digital Media Services unit of the Mitchell Multimedia Center. Functions include coordination of digital services offered to faculty and advanced students; server and workstation management and maintenance; supervision of part-time student assistants; training students, faculty and staff in the use of the area's software and hardware; collaboration on projects with faculty and library staff, including the development of collections of digital materials; participation in the continuing development of the electronic reserve system.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages daily operations in Digital Media Services facilities. Oversees workstation configuration and management, student staff workflow, production services, and training events. Supervises nine DMS part-time student consultants, including hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating. Assists faculty, staff, and students working on a wide variety of multimedia projects at a range of levels. Collaborates with library and other university staff on web and multimedia training programs for faculty. Participates in collaborative project planning and management with faculty and staff where appropriate under the direction of the Head of Digital Media Services. May participate in projects to design and create digital collections, including digital video reserve and other digital library collections. Provides technical support for the Electronic Reserve System. Assists in integration of new technologies and new approaches to the delivery of reserve services. Participates in planning and implementing library web publishing projects in collaboration with the Library Webmaster and Web Development Group. May participate in long-term planning for evolution of digital services within the library and the university as a whole. Performs other duties as assigned.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Masters degree from an ALA accredited program in library science, or other advanced degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience. High degree of familiarity with the Macintosh and Windows operating systems. Advanced working knowledge of web technologies, the use of the Internet in higher education, and awareness of current trends and developments in the use of the Web to deliver information and services. Demonstrated knowledge of HTML and related standards. Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to work well with faculty, students, and colleagues, and a proven high degree of initiative. Preferred: Some experience in a public service area of an academic/research library. UNIX computing experience. Basic knowledge of current scanning technology. Experience with computer applications related to graphic design, web authoring, and digital video.

    SALARY: Dependent on qualifications, minimum $30,000.
