<pre> One week ago I had the french manager of I2S in my office, together with a british distributor. They are very keen to get a piece of the rather tight "bookscanner" market in the libraries/archives world. We in Oxford are in particularly interested in the new B/W 10000 (10000 CCD) Bookscanner which offers us the 600 dpi resolution (and more) we require for our digital master files (we recently ordered a Zeutschel Omniscan 7000). I2S hopes to launch the colour version of the scanner as well early next year.

I2S started their business from the software site and they seem to be quite competent in this area. They are very proud on the bookcurvature feature - we will see. There were other manufacturers in the past who advertised this feature - unfortunately without real success. I received a copy of their "Bookrestorer" software and we will test it in the near future.

Promising (from the preservation point of view) is their technique to move the camera head and the light (mounted on the column) over the surface of the book (object). This minimises significantly the lux intensity for the book because the light affects only a small portion of the book surface. You don't need a glass plate to hold the page down
    - so you have no pressure on the book spine/binding.

The price for the B/W 10000 camera (incl. column) here in Europe should be about 40.000 Euro but I guess there may be some flexibility.

However: we might get one B/W 10000 camera for testing into our reprographic studio (in November) - I keep you informed about our test results.
