In 1979 when I began cataloging maps at the
Colorado School of Mines Library, I began keeping
monthly stats of use, and matched them against
number of titles and pieces cataloged. I almost
immediately saw an increase in use (both in-house
and checkout), which became especially marked
when I got to ca. 70% of the collection cataloged.
Makes sense - persons aren't as likely to ask
for something if they don't know you have it.
