              "Jay Wright: Dimensions of History"
                    November 1-2, 1996

   In the second of its biennial symposia, Washington University Libraries' Department of Special Collections will host a celebration of the work of African-American poet Jay Wright.

FRIDAY, 1 NOVEMBER

     7:00 PM -- THYLIAS MOSS and ARTHUR SZE: readings. CARL PHILLIPS,
                Master of Ceremonies. Women's Building Lounge.

SATURDAY, 2 NOVEMBER
     11:00 AM -- ISIDORE OKPEWHO: lecture. Women's Building Lounge.
     2:00 PM -- HAROLD BLOOM, ISIDORE OKPEWHO, THYLIAS MOSS, ARTHUR SZE,
                RANDOLPH POPE: panel discussion. STEVEN MEYER, Moderator.
                Women's Building Lounge.
     8:00 PM -- JAY WRIGHT: reading. Women's Building Lounge.
             -- A reception will follow.

Called "a permanent American poet", one of the country's most eloquent and powerful voices, Jay Wright is the author of six books of poems, and is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, and a MacArthur Fellowship. "A young man, hearing me read some of my poems," Wright has remarked, "said that I seemed to be trying to weave together a lot of different things. My answer is that they are already woven, I'm just trying to uncover the weave."
