Regardless of the size of the LRC, when you want to find an out-of-print book, you want to search as far and wide as possible to see who offers the title in the best condition (hardback vs. paperback, etc.) and at the best price.

There are several services on the Web that you can use to find almost any title you want.

The one that claims to be the largest is BIBLIOFIND http://www.bibliofind.com/ They offer "4 million old, used and rare books offered by 1500 dealers around the world..."

The online service I prefer is INTERLOC http://interloc.com/ It seems to be much better organized, current and easier to use. Frankly, I find more of the things I am looking for here. However, they only offer a mere 3.1 million books, maps and ephemera for sale from more than 1700 dealers! You will find some overlap between INTERLOC and BIBLIOFIND, as some dealers sell in both places.

One large bookstore that does not participate in either of the above services is POWELL'S BOOKS in Portland, OR. They claim "over a million used, NEW and out of print books in stock..." If you've ever been to Powell's, it is a pretty impressive collection. POWELL'S is at http://www.powells.portland.or.us/

If you are looking for rare, antiquarian type books, a good source is ABAA (Antiquarian Booksellers' Assoc. of America) BOOKNET at http://www.clark.net/pub/abaa-booknet/booknet.html You can search the online catalogs of 250 antiquarian booksellers.

Of course, at any given time there are many books that cannot be found. For example, it is usually not worth the bookseller's time to post online those books that only sell for a couple of dollars or less. Many of the smaller used book stores are not online at all, but scan BOOKMAN'S WEEKLY magazine for titles wanted. I'm sure one of your local used book dealers will buy an ad in BOOKMAN'S WEEKLY for you, if you are looking for a particular author/title. Look in your local phonebook yellow pages under "Books--Used and Rare."
