But if there is software out there to check on URLs to make
sure they are valid, wouldn't this be a feature of the new
digital catalog....of course we would need an official URL
problem resolver in our catalog department.

Alex, see my posted message to the group. I really wonder whether it's worth the cataloging labor to try to maintain URLs? At this embryonic stage of electronic records and sites, it is impossible to maintain permanent cataloging records in static places (such as academic libraries, public libraries, even special libraries) unless there is a partnership between systems operators and librarians.

Maybe this calls for such a partnership to evolve ASAP. Vive Cybrarianship!

True, the title of the document pointed to by that URL should be what the User gets to see, and it should be left to the webcat admins to make sure that those URLs remain valid.

Alas, URL validating is dirty work, but should be done IMO.
