FACULTY POSITION Assistant Professor of Library & Information Science - Fall 1996

The School of Library and Information Science, The Catholic University of America, seeks a full-time assistant professor to provide leadership in the areas of information technology and digital resources, to plan for and manage the ongoing services of the School's Computer Laboratories, and to teach graduate courses in information systems for libraries and information centers, networking and digital libraries. Requirements for consideration include an earned doctorate as well as an MSLS, MLS, and/or substantial experience in libraries, archives, information centers, or the information industry.

The successful candidate will (1) provide leadership and support for faculty and students in all areas of information technology, networking, and instruction including laboratory, office, and off-campus sites; (2) plan, implement, and administer ongoing expansion of the School's computing facilities, including hardware, software, and the development and maintenance of network services; (3) assist in the supervision of full-time and part-time student lab assistants, including a webmaster; (4) participate in the development and delivery of instruction in information technologies through courses, workshops, and instructional materials for faculty and students, both on and off-campus, teach a minimum of 5 courses per academic year; (5) maintain a regular schedule to work with students and faculty in the laboratory; (6) represent the School, University, and profession through service in scholarly and professional societies, associations, and other organizations; and (7) identify and respond to opportunities presented by changing information technologies.

Appointment will be at the assistant professor level on the tenure track OR as a clinical position (renewable but non-tenure track). For the former, candidates must show evidence of scholarly research and publication and the ability to establish a strong research agenda in automated systems, digital libraries, networking or related areas. Excellent teaching, communications and leadership skills, and the ability to work with a collegial community of faculty, staff, students, and alumni are required regardless of the nature of the appointment. Experience with Microsoft systems and products is desirable.

The School of Library and Information Science is accredited by the American Library Association and grants the MS in LS. The School serves over 350 full- and part-time students on the CUA campus, at the Library of Congress, and at three sites in Virginia. The Catholic University of America is sponsored by the Roman Catholic bishops of the United States as a national university and center of instruction and research. Its faculties are composed of teachers from diverse backgrounds and religious traditions, but members and associates of the faculties are expected to respect the religious commitment and mission of the University and to be supportive of its aims and ideals.
