Who Should Attend: All are welcome. Highly recommended for librarians implementing or developing Z39.50 projects. State of Iowa Libraries Online (SILO) Z39.50 grant participants, library administrators, library technical staff should attend.
What: A symposium on the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 Information Retrieval standard. The SILO library network makes extensive use of Z39.50, a national standard defining a protocol for computer-to-computer information retrieval.
Keynote Speakers:
Ray Denenberg - Library of Congress
Ray Denenberg came to the Library of Congress Network Development Office in 1983 to manage the development and implementation of the telecommunication and prococol component of the Linked Systems Project. He was Chair of the ANSI/NISO committee that first proposed Z39.50 as an ANSI standard in 1984. He has been the technical editor and principal author of the Z39.50 standard, and has had overall responsibility for its development and maintenance since its inception in 1984. He currently is director of the Z39.50 Maintenance Agency which is housed at the Library of Congress.
Fay Turner - National Library of Canada
Fay Turner is a Library Network Specialist in the Information Technology Services Branch of the National Library of Canada (NLC). Over the past 13 years she has worked on numerous projects relating to the development, implementation and promotion of standards and new technologies for libraries, in particular the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Protocol Standard and the Z39.50 Information Retrieval Standard. As one of the original designers of the ILL protocol, Ms. Turner co-edits the ILL protocol standard documents, managed the ILL Protocol Implementation Program in Canada, maintains the ILL Protocol Register, and currently participates in the international ILL Protocol Implementors Group. As the Z39.50 resource person within the National Library of Canada, Ms. Turner managed the Search and Retrieve Protocol implementation Project which resulted in the development of public domain Z39.50 software, managed NLC s Z39.50 AMICUS Project to evaluate the application of Z39.50 client capabilities to NLC functions, participates in the Z39.50 Implementors Group (ZIG) and Government Information Locator Service (GILS) groups, and promotes Z39.50 through articles and information sessions. She also represents Canada on the ISO working group (ISO TC46/SC4/WG4) responsible for the ILL and Search and Retrieve Standards.
James J. Michael
Jim is a retired Vice President with Data Research Associates (DRA). He has been working in and with libraries since 1961. He spent 11 years with the St. Louis Public Library before designing the first automation products developed by DRA. Jim represented DRA in the development of national and international standards as a member of the Standards Development Committee (SDC) of The National Information Standards Organization (NISO). He has received the ALA Gaylord Award and in 1995 was named a NISO fellow.
