CALA 1997 Scholarship Winners

The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) is pleased to announce the following scholarship winners:

1. Sheila Suen Lai Scholarship ($500): The winner is Mr. Anthony Yu-Ning Tse, a doctoral student at the College of Library and Information Services, the University of Maryland, College Park. Drawing on his background in biology and information management, Mr. Tse has been involved in translating user information systems requirements for technical staff in information services at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He is investigating new forms of human-computer interface and organizational interface that will facilitate a greater level of collaboration and communication. Mr. Tse has a B.A. in biochemistry and graduated magna cum laude from Dartmouth College. He also has an M.S. in information systems from George Washington University.

2. CALA Scholarship, sponsored by Julia Tung ($500): The winner is Hsianghui Liu-Spencer, a master's student at the Graduate School of Library and Information Study of the University of Rhode Island (URI). Her interest is college/university librarianship, with an emphasis on technical services. She has been involved in a manuscript cataloging project at the Newport Historical Society, a serials database management project in the Providence Public Library, and a bibliographic control project at URI. Ms. Liu-Spencer has a B.A. in English from National Taiwan Normal University and an M.Ed. in early childhood education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

The above two scholarships are designed to encourage the development of leadership in Chinese American librarianship.

3. C. C. Seetoo/CALA Conference Travel Scholarship ($500): The winner is Hsin-liang Chen, a doctoral student at the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Chen's interests are digital libraries, multimedia, and human-computer interaction. In addition to excellent technical skills and a talent for graphic design, he has a strong appreciation of human factors in system design. He has experience in teaching, supervising an information division, and designing graphics for multimedia and WWW projects. Mr. Chen has a diploma from Taipei Municipal Teachers College, a B.A. in library science from Fu-Jen Catholic University, and an M.A. in educational communication and technology from New York University.

The Seetoo/CALA scholarship is designed to provide the award recipient mentoring and networking opportunities at the ALA annual conference.

These awards will be presented at CALA's Annual Award Banquet on June 28 at Royal Jade Seafood Restaurant in San Francisco during the ALA annual conference.
