Controlled fields other than 856 in our web catalog act like searches. Clicking on an author field in a record does a search of the catalog for all items by that author in that catalog.

Yes, but I would see this more a function of the authority record for an entity. Adding a link to a home page for a person or a website for an organization, etc. - would make sense from the authority record for that entity - not from every record in the catalog associated w/that entity. It would definitely enhance the usefulness of authority records!
